The Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) implements government policies and programs to provide education and training opportunities for all Australians, to increase employment participation and to ensure fair and productive workplaces. Education, training and workforce participation are central to our goal of building a productive and socially inclusive nation, one which values diversity and provides opportunities for all Australians to build rewarding social and economic lives.

In 1992, the Commonwealth Government innitiated a major reform of the VET system to align training directly with industry needs and leadership. Policy has evolved since that time to strengthen the focus on a national training system which is industry lead, transferable and cost effective.

DEEWR has developed a coordinated system of stakeholders and lead agencies to promote and implement the system. These include:

  • Australian Qualifications Frameworkdeewr_web
  • Australian Quality Council
  • National Training Forum
  • State and Territory Training Authorities
  • Industry Skills Councils
  • Registered Training Organisations
