Government Skills Australia is pleased to advise that it has been commissioned by the Department for Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) to develop a Training Package for Translating, Interpreting and Bilingual work, for national endorsement in 2009 (TIB09).

The Training Package project arises from the recommendations of the Project to Scope the Need for Competency Standards for Interpreters and Translators, completed in December 2005 by Service Skills Australia.

web_combination_tiTIB09 is expected to translate into more and more consistent training and professional development opportunities for translators and interpreters, and the ability to obtain nationally and internationally portable VET sector qualifications through recognition of prior learning, on the job assessment, or formal training.

Nationally endorsed competency standards, enshrined in training packages, are the basis for occupational training in over 85 per cent of Australian industry, and in several industries are also the basis for occupational classifications underpinning industrial awards, performance management programs and career paths. TIB09 may therefore also result in concrete industrial outcomes for translators, interpreters and bilingual workers.

The TIB09 Project is being guided by a steering committee comprising professional associations, employers, employees, training providers and key stakeholders, with input from topic or sector-specific reference groups, and a broad cross-section of the T&I industry and its stakeholders.

The steering committee met for the first time in Adelaide in mid-May to endorse project timelines and confirm stakeholders and consultation objectives. The starting point for the consultations is the findings of the Scoping Project Report in relation to the skills and knowledge required for competent performance in interpreting, translating, and the other relevant occupations.

A six-month process of ongoing and iterative consultation will commence in the first week of June and will be facilitated by our Industry Consultant. The first round of consultations will run until the end of July before the drafting of units commences, with the second round beginning September.

The TIB09 project has significant implications for the T&I profession, its trainers and educators and its employers and contracting service providers.
