New Training Package project for Translators, Interpreters & Bilingual Workers

The Department Of Education Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) has recently provided funding to the national Industry Skills Council, Government Skills Australia (GSA) for the development of a Training Package for the Interpreter and Translator Industry.

In 2005/6 a scoping report was developed by Services Skills Australia for this industry. Undertaken through an extensive consultation process, this report recommended that nationally endorsed qualifications be developed to assist in the training of translators and interpreters. On this basis, GSA will further develop units for a range of qualifications for Translating, Interpreting and Bilingual workers.

Government Skills Australia has developed a project team that will undertake the consultation and writing processes for the package, with the case for endorsement set for early/mid 2009. The project will be guided through the support of a project steering committee and reference groups representing a broad cross section of the T&I industry. The Committee will include industry representatives, employers, employees and providers of training as well as key stakeholders.
