Public Safety - On the Road

johnscottinfosessionThe past three months have seen John Scott, Public Safety Industry Advisory Officer (IAO) and John Nibbs, Defence IAO travel to 11 regional and capital city locations across Australia to conduct information sessions on the Public Safety Training Package.

The sessions aimed to provide details on what constitutes the Public Safety Industry and how specific industries are represented within Public Safety and Government Skills Australia. The majority of sessions conducted were held after lunch following on from a generic GSA information session in the morning.

Janet Curran from the Fire and Emergency Services Authority (FESA), an attendee at the Perth information session held on Wednesday, 12th of September said: “It has been valuable to get together with other industry sectors to discuss initiatives that are being considered across GSA.”

Back home, a detailed funding submission for Phase 2 of the Review of the Public Safety Training Package has been forwarded to the Department of Education, Science and Training. The proposal seeks appropriate funding as requested by the industry sectors and an assurance of continued funding to the end of the 2008 - 2009 financial year. A proposal has also been developed for funding from the Department of Health and Ageing to improve the skills of Police in managing crisis situations involving people with dementia and their carers.

GSA welcomed a new staff member. Andy Smith was seconded by Emergency Management Australia from the Department of Justice, Victoria and has now commenced a full-time Project Officer role with GSA across a number of sectors of the Public Safety Training Package Review.

The combined Industry Advisory Committee (IAC) conference held in Adelaide in August provided an excellent forum for the Public Safety IAC to consider new National training issues and to develop future project proposals.

The PUA00 Public Safety Training Package Version 6 was endorsed on 12 July ‘07 and is available in CD Version from the GSA e-shop.
