The current qualifications for Auslan, delivered in most states and territories, are accredited in Victoria. These qualifications are in the process of being reviewed for re-accreditation by a project team at Kangan Batman TAFE Institute in Victoria.
The review process has identified the need to make the qualifications more flexible and to more clearly demonstrate a progression of skills through the levels of qualifications. The review will also convert the current curriculum modules to competency standards, in line with national VET policy.
The project team is preparing draft units of competency covering language development and structure and Deaf culture and community. The language units will be divided into use of Auslan for personal, social and community, employment and learning purposes. The qualifications progress from Certificate II to Diploma.
Project Timeframe
The project will finish its preliminary draft units of competency and a new qualifications framework by the end of February. This will then be distributed nationally for feedback and re-working by mid March 2010, when a submission for re-accreditation will be lodged.
Re-accreditation support
The Government Skills Australia website, www.governmentskills.com.au will have all the information needed to provide support for the re-accreditation of the qualifications. The site contains the final drafts of the qualifications framework and the units of competency. There is also a Validation Form which can be completed and sent to GSA or to the Project Coordinator: Jan Van Leest jvanleest@kangan.edu.au
Review of the drafts
To ensure that the new qualifications adequately capture the requirements and practices in all states and territories, the project is very keen to have nominations of experienced practitioners and trainers from diverse geographical and community/employment contexts. Volunteers will be asked to select units of competency or qualifications (not necessarily the whole lot) and provide feedback, especially in content which needs improvement. Volunteers may develop this feedback based on their own experience, or may use it as an opportunity to collaborate with colleagues. Generally we will ask for a two week turn around on feedback. The final drafts will then be redistributed and made available on the GSA and Kangan Batman websites and supporters will be asked to complete Validation Forms.
Impact of the review
When the qualifications have been re-accredited, Registered Training Providers will have 12 months to adopt the reviewed qualifications. The project does not anticipate that there will be extensive changes required of RTOs except where there are definite and agreed improvements to be made. For more information about how to support the qualifications, check the website or contact Prue Madsen or the Project Coordinator.
